Const. Michael Scoretz on paid suspension, faces a trial for possession of child pornography in March
A Surrey RCMP officer who received the Award of Valour in 2015 is on trial next month for two charges of accessing child pornography.
Const. Michael Scoretz also faces two counts of breaching his release for allegations on Bowen Island, April 15 and May 24, 2023.
The child porn charges stem from allegations in Chilliwack on May 10, 2022, and in Burnaby on Aug. 31, 2022. As the case is before the courts, there are no details regarding the substance of the allegations.
Scoretz is currently suspended with pay and his duty status is subject to continuous review and assessment, according to RCMP 'E' Division spokesperson S/Sgt. Kris Clark.
“Immediately upon learning of the circumstances, a code of conduct investigation was initiated and remains ongoing,” Clark told me via email.
The case was scheduled to fix a date on the substantive charges on Tuesday (Feb. 4, 2025) in Chilliwack. A pre-trial conference is planned in Vancouver on Feb. 6. A three-day trial is then scheduled to run March 25, 26, 27 in provincial court in Chilliwack.
The two breach charges are scheduled for trial is also scheduled for Aug. 7 and Aug. 8.
In 2015, Scoretz was one among 28 police officers from the Lower Mainland District and Integrated Teams to be recognized for bravery by B.C.'s Lieutenant Governor. He received the Award of Valour for an incident on July 18, 2013, in Surrey when a distraught, aggressive man confronted the officer with a knife.
Scoretz received the award at the force's annual police honours night in Victoria from then lieutenant governor Judith Guichon and then Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton.
