One person dead after fire at downtown Chilliwack apartment
Crews contained third-floor blaze Thursday morning to unit of origin allowing other residents to return
One person is dead after a fire at a Victoria Avenue apartment Thursday (January 23, 2025) morning
The Chilliwack Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke coming from a third-floor unit in an apartment building located in the 45800-block of Victoria Avenue.
Upon arrival, crews heard fire alarms sounding, but no visible smoke was seen from the exterior. After further investigation, crews found an active fire within one unit, prompting a call for additional resources to the scene.
Crews were able to contain the fire to the single affected unit leaving minimal damage to other units in the building, which allowed residents to return to their homes.
Fire crews then discovered a deceased individual at the scene.
"The Chilliwack Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the individual," according to a news release.
BC Emergency Health Services (BCAS) and the RCMP were also on scene to provide support, and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the RCMP, with support from the Chilliwack Fire Department.
No injuries to firefighters were reported.
The Chilliwack Fire Department news release expressed gratitude to building residents for evacuating promptly when alarms sounded to create the necessary space for firefighters to safely and effectively respond.
