Iain Hunt faces one count of indignity to human remains in connection with his wife's death, her body found near Hope

The husband of a woman found dead near Hope three months after she went missing in 2021 has been charged, and is due in Port Coquitlam court next month.

Iain Rene Hunt, 52, is charged with one count of interference or indignity to human remains in connection with Trina Hunt's death. The actual cause of her death has not been released.

Trina Hunt was reported missing to the Port Moody Police Department on Jan. 18, 2021. An extensive search was conducted by police, her family and members of the community.

Trina's body was found south of Silver Creek near Hope on March 29, 2021. A few weeks later, the RCMP's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) confirmed the remains were that of the 48-year-old woman.

Today, on Feb. 4, 2025, the BC Prosecution Service approved one count under section 182(b) of the criminal code that addresses dead bodies. Specifically, the charge is that a person is guilty of an indictable offence who "improperly or indecently interferes with or offers any indignity to a dead human body or human remains, whether buried or not."

A conviction comes with a sentence of not more than five years in prison.

"The laying of a charge does not dilute the loss and pain endured by Trina’s family and friends," said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT in a news release Tuesday. "There is still a long road ahead as the community continues to heal from her tragic death.

"However, today’s outcome is the result of the persistence and dedication by the investigators who were committed to seeing the case through and we must acknowledge this is a step forward as the court process begins."

Iain Hunt is scheduled for a first appearance at the Port Coquitlam Law Courts on March 5 at 9 a.m.
